What is Counselling?

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy defines Counselling as a “safe and confidential space for you to talk to a trained professional about your issues and concerns. Your counsellor will help you explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours so you can develop a better understanding of yourself and of others”.

What can Counselling help with?

Feeling down, anxious or stressed for a while could be a sign that something else in our lives is wrong, or that we need some help. It’s also a very natural reaction, if we’ve had a major loss or shock, such as bereavement, unemployment, divorce or have been diagnosed with a serious health problem. In these situations, the sooner we get support, the better. No matter how old we are, we can all experience stress and sadness, and that’s why counselling can help anyone and everyone from young children to older adults.

What should I expect from Counselling?

In the first session, you and Karen will discuss how you’ll work together, and any goals you might have. Throughout all your sessions, you will be able to talk freely, without being interrupted and Karen will listen to you without judgment. She will be impartial but understanding. She may offer information, but she won’t tell you what you should think or do.

Karen will not give you their opinions or advice. She will help you and guide you towards finding your own solutions – whether that’s making effective changes in your life or finding ways of coping with your problems. Karen is an integrative counsellor which means she practises a number of modalities, and can tailor her approach to suit each client – be they children or adults.
